What Makes a Good All-Purpose Cleaner? The Details Matter More Than You Think

An all-purpose cleaner is probably one of the most-used products in your home. We spray it on kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, tables, sinks, and all of those little everyday messes that seem to appear out of nowhere.

So when I was choosing an all-purpose cleaner for LakeHouse Naturals, I wanted something simple: a cleaner I felt good about using in my own home that also actually worked.

But I also wanted it to be something I enjoyed reaching for every day.

What I Look for in an Everyday Cleaner

I started LakeHouse Naturals because I wanted to make it easier to find everyday products made without many of the ingredients I had personally decided I didn't want in my home.

With an all-purpose cleaner, I wanted a straightforward formula without synthetic fragrance, phthalates, parabens, sulfates, EDTA, or PEGs.

One thing I specifically didn't want was a Castile soap-based cleaner.

Castile soap is popular in many natural household cleaners, but depending on the formula, the surface, and even the water you're using, soap-based cleaners can leave behind a film or residue.

And to me, there's nothing convenient about cleaning a surface only to feel like you need to go back over it again.

Harbor Mist uses plant-derived surfactants rather than Castile soap. They help lift away everyday dirt and grime while giving me what I really wanted from an all-purpose cleaner: a clean surface without that soapy residue left behind.

Even the trigger sprayer took some work. I tried several before choosing one that felt comfortable in the hand, sprayed well, and had the quality I wanted without the leaking and dripping I found with others.

It's a small detail, but I think good everyday products should be thoughtfully designed from the formula all the way down to the sprayer.

Cleaner Products Can Still Be Beautiful

I also don't believe choosing products with ingredients you're more comfortable with means sacrificing how they look in your home.

Living here at the Lake of the Ozarks has influenced so much of LakeHouse Naturals.

I wanted the name of our everyday cleaner to feel fresh, simple, and connected to the place we call

home. Harbor Mist felt like exactly that.
